North Florida News to Share - Veterans Edition

Brought to you by the U.S. Small Business Administration

Operation: Boots to Business

SBA's North Florida District Office recently provided Boots to Business training at the Mayport Naval Station. Training topics included starting a business, financing options, business planning, marketing, and the economics of small business. Participants also learned about franchising, creating a business, and purchasing a business. The training was well attended, and included both enlisted and veteran participants.

SBA's Boots to Business program is available to all veterans, transitioning members of the military, and their families. The NFDO team hosts these trainings at various military installations in North Florida. For information about the next Boots to Business training opportunity or to learn more about the program, contact Natalie Hall at (904) 443-1902.

North Florida District Signs Agreements to Work with Local Non-Profit Groups

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) relies on its network of service providers to reach small and disadvantaged businesses throughout its vast territory. It is important for each district to offer training and support to as many firms in North Florida. To this end, the North Florida District Office (NFDO) actively seeks out partnership opportunities with local non-profit and government organizations to reach more entrepreneurs. To explore whether your non-profit entity is qualified to sign a Stragetic Alliance Memorandum (SAM) with the district, contact Nayana Sen at (904) 443-1900.

NFDO most recently signed three SAM agreements with the Jacksonville Indo-US Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Design and Consulting Foundation, and the Central Florida Expressway Authority.

Federal Government Meets Commitment to U.S. Small Businesses

By Cassius Butts, Regional Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration

As Regional Administrator for the Southeast Region for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), I am proud to announce our federal government met its small business federal contracting goal for the first time in eight years, thanks to the SBA and President Obama's commitment to increasing small business contracting opportunities. In Fiscal Year 2013, our government awarded 23.39 percent in federal contracts to small businesses which is $83.1 billion of eligible contracting dollars according to SBA's Small Business Procurement Scorecard.

LEARNING

Are you a veteran or enlisted member of the military looking to start or grow a business?

See what the SBA can do to help you!

DD Gonzalez

"Veterans make great business owners because they have been taught how to manage both people and resources. The SBA and its partners can help veterans take that training, and turn it into a competitive advantage. I highly encourage any veterans thinking about starting a business to give my staff a call to see how to get started."
