Battle of Blue Licks Commemoration

The Battle of Blue Licks Reenactment is the weekend of August 16 -17, 2014 at the Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park.

Blue Licks Battlefield History

"The Battle of Blue Licks has the combined drama of frontier warfare and the Revolutionary War. On August 19, 1782, nearly 70 Kentuckians died in what some historians have called the 'Last Battle of the American Revolution.' While that claim is debatable, the struggle at Blue Licks embodies the conflict between the American Indian, Kentucky settlers, and the British Crown."

"The site of the Battle of Blue Licks enshrines the memory of the men who died in one of the worst military defeats of the American Revolution. Although Lord Charles Cornwallis had surrendered British forces at Yorktown, Va. on October 19, 1781, bringing to a close the major hostilities of the American Revolution, isolated conflicts between the Americans, British, and Indians still occurred. The Kentucky frontier experienced some of the bloodiest British and Indian raids of the war."

The battle involved names famous in early Kentucky history, including General George Rogers Clark, Colonel John Todd, Colonel Benjamin Logan, Lt. Colonel Stephen Trigg, and Lt. Colonel Daniel Boone (yes, that Daniel Boone). Todd and Trigg were both killed in the battle, as was Daniel Boone's youngest son, Israel.

Getting More SBA Loans into the Hands of the Underserved

Photo of Cassius Butts

by Cassius Butts, Region IV Administrator for the SBA

As Regional Administrator for Region IV of the U.S. Small Business Administration, my job, and the job of the agency, is to help more small business owners and entrepreneurs gain access to the capital they need to start or grow their business.

SBA has made gains in expanding its programs, but there is still more to do to ensure that our SBA loans are available to every business owner who needs one. Underserved communities in particular still have trouble accessing the capital they need to achieve their dreams.

When Maria Contreras-Sweet became SBA Administrator in April 2014, she made clear that improving access to capital for the underserved would be a top priority. That is why we are pleased to announce that under her leadership SBA will be transforming its guarantee process to serve America's small businesses – and the entrepreneurs who own those businesses – better.

More Than a Restaurant: The Café Is Creating Jobs and Helping Refugees

Photo of The Cafe Restaurant Owners

Sal and Cindy Rubino, owners of The Café Restaurant in Louisville.

The Café received an SBA 504 loan for $445,000 to provide long-term, fixed financing to purchase equipment and relocate a restaurant to an older building on the edge of

downtown Louisville, KY. The restaurant had been located about a mile away in an antique mall for 12 years.

"We absolutely could not have pulled this off without the help of the SBA and the bank" said Sal Rubino. "The loan officer at the bank along with folks at the Certified Development Company (CDC) completely walked us through the process of obtaining the SBA loan. It was their dedication and support that ultimately made our dream come true."

SBA Recently Eased Key Loan Requirements

Effective July 1, 2014, SBA lenders no longer have to perform an analysis of cash flow or debt-service coverage on loans of $350,000 or less, eliminating two requirements.

Using the new SBA scoring tool, banks are now incentivized to underwrite more small-dollar loans and reduce the time needed to originate a small-dollar loan by as much as 50%.

SupplierPay: A New Strategy to Drive Small Business Growth

On July 11, SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet joined President Obama at the White House to announce the launch of SupplierPay. It's a new project dedicated to giving America's entrepreneurs access to affordable, consistent working capital. It's about paying them on time and keeping their interest rates low, so they can invest in new equipment, new products and new people.
